Cyprus was a weird one. It had all the trappings of a good holiday – a mix of urban and coastal, fantastic food, rich history – and yet something wasn’t right: me. 

We went in early March, choosing Cyprus because it was cheap and promised temperatures of up to 22C. I took my mother, part of a burgeoning tradition that I see as partly an exercise in bondi…
